De acordo com o Washington Post, a RAT (ram air turbine) foi ativada automaticamente, o que indica falha crítica de sistemas principais. Especialistas sugerem que houve colapso simultâneo de motores ou falha eléctrica generalizada.
A investigação está a ser liderada pela AAIB da Índia (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau), com apoio do NTSB dos Estados Unidos e da AAIB do Reino Unido. As caixas-pretas foram recuperadas e estão a ser analisadas em laboratórios recém-inaugurados em Nova Deli.
